If its an older game you are playing and you are running Windows 7 or Windows 8 it may not work, if you right click the.exe file and choose Properties and then Compatibility you can change this to run in Windows 98/ Windows 2000 etc. You can find more information on the Beginners Help page.

Hi all, this is my first steam forum post but I wanted to make it because Desperados was one of my favourite games back in the day, so I hope it will help those having trouble running the game. After many attempts and much disappointment I've finally managed to get Desperados working on my laptop and in full screen display. It's not a perfect solution by any means as occasional crashes persist and there are slight slow downs when the enemy field of view is activated but it's playable and I would highly recommend that others give the following workaround a try if the game is currently unplayable for you. I have not tested this workaround on Windows 7 or Windows 10, just Windows 8.1 but I have a feeling it will work on all three versions of Windows. All credit go to steam users MegalomaniacNG, Draregbr and NafanYa for providing the original instructions, which I've only compiled into one list to try and make things easier for the average gamer to follow. 1) Download the following. 1.1) Unrar the downloaded file (DSWin8.zip) and you should have two files in the extracted folder (ddraw.dll and aqrit.cfg).

Alive

1.2) Place these two files into your 'Steam SteamApps Common Desperados Wanted Dead or Alive' directory (in with the game.exe). 2) Download V20290build.rar of DxWnd from. (I've been advised by other users that the newer versions don't work for the purpose of running this game.) 3) Unrar and inside the extracted foler and run 'dxwnd.exe' as administrator. Go to 'Edit-Add', in parameter 'Name' set the name as Desperados.

4) In parameter 'Path' choose the.exe file of the game (in my case it looks like Steam SteamApps common Desperados Wanted Dead or Alive game.exe). 5) In the 'Main' tab, under 'Generic' untick 'Run in Window'. 5.1) Also in 'Main' tab, under 'Position' set 'Window initial position & size' to X=0 and Y=0. Set 'W' and 'H' to your native resolution (in my case that's W=1920 and H=1080). 6) In the 'Video' tab, under 'Windows handling' tick 'Modal Style' and under 'Color management' tick 'Set 16BPP RGB565 encoding'. 7) Next in 'Input' tab tick 'Hide Cursor'.

If the cursor flickers on the main screen of the game don't worry, it works fine in-game. 8) Lastly click 'OK' in dxwnd, if all is good it will show a green circle before the name of the game in DxWnd. Launch the game in Steam (Not in DxWnd itself, DxWnd runs in the backround!). You may get an error/alert that says something like 'SetHook: proc=GetAvailableVidMem(D) oldhook=26b3e0'. If this happens just press the Return key on your keyboard. If you can't select the error/alert window use Alt+Tab keys to cycle through the open windows. This part is just a bit of a trial and error, I don't know why it happens but you can get past it.

9) You will need to start DxWnd every time before you launch the game. When you close dxwnd, answer 'Yes' to save the options that you changed.

Open vmware tools install. Finally I would kindly ask Nordic Games to please make a make proper fix for the game, if possible, as it it unacceptable to release a game that is basically unplayable.UPDATE 1 - 19/06/14. To rectify the enemy field of view slowdown in DXWnd, under 'Video' tab, instead of ticking 'Forces 16BPP desktop', as I had stated in the orginal instructions and have now removed, untick it and the game should now run smooth when the ememy field of view is activated. I have tested this and it has worked for me perfectly. If you still have a slow down try ticking 'Simulates 16BPP desktop' to see if that makes any improvement.

Full credit goes to Steam user typicaleverything for this correction. Thanks a lot.:D.UPDATE 2 - 23/11/15. 'Motorboat Crashing' Steam user Fava had experieced frequent crashes seemingly triggered by different sounds playing in the game. After some research he found that selecting 'Set Single Core Process Affinity' in the 'Compatibility' tab fixed his crashing issue.

Full thanks to Fava for posting this information, as proactive feedback provides everyone with more solutions to try.UPDATE 3 - 28/12/16. Steam user iFreilicht has kindly posted updated steps relevent to using the latest version of DxWnd (which is V2.04.01.fx3 as of posting). If you have the time, please give feedback as regards to whether or not these additions helped. If so, I will incorprate them into the original instructions. Many thanks to iFreilicht for his contribution.

On step 6, the option 'Set 16BPP RGB565 encoding' has been moved to the DirectX(2) tab to the 'Ddraw tweaks' section. Additionally, select '16 BPP' as 'Initial virtual colour setting' on the Video Tab. On step 7, the 'Hide Cursor' tick-box has been removed. Instead, set 'Cursor Visibility' to 'Hide'. Using the new version of DxWnd seems to alleviate the problem that led to the alert mentioned in step 8. On step 9, just clicking File-Save after setting everything up is safer than relying on the settings to be saved when closing DxWnd.

I also got slowdowns when an enemies cone of vision was displayed as other people have reported. To fix that, I disabled all Special Effects options (Fully Transparent Cones of Vision, Realistic Shadows, Animated Effects, Animated Backgrounds) and now it runs buttery smooth like it did on WinXP back in the day.
