I have just updated the DSM of a Synology Nas. DSM 5.2-5644 Update 2.

To get started with the update process, simply navigate to the web-based interface for your Synology NAS. On the default desktop, you’ll see the Package Center.

It seems now I can no longer use the Package center. But, as I have not used the Package Center for a long time, I'm not 100% the issue is related to this DSM upgrade. When selecting sections like Utilities, Security, Backup or even Community, I get the error message Connection failed. Please check your network settings after a long time of 'Loading.' Turning wheel. I checked my firewall settings, and allowed every ports and protocols.

But that is not sufficient, since I still have the same error. Any idea what I should check?

Because the error message doesn't give me lots of information. My situation was a bit different. I had installed the DNS package, but the DNS was disabled after an OS update.

I had (stupidly) pointed the Synology configuration, under Network / General / Preferred DNS server, to the Synology DNS, not the external DNS. Since the Synology DNS was offline, it caused the connectivity problem (even though the network interfaces themselves pointed to the external DNS). Changing the Preferred DNS back to the external DNS fixed the connection problem, and the package system started working again.

I have had my DS712+ since it came out, and ever since late ver. 4.X DSM updates, I've had some issues with the package center telling me my network connection is shit, 'Connection failed. Please check your network settings.' Message pops up.

I'm now on the latest ver 5.2.x update as of mid last week. Most of the time it fails to update.

But if I try it 10 minutes later, it works fine. But if I try to add package repos that I have checked on SYNOMON to be known live and working, or delete and re-add one that is 100% uptime, it tells me 'Invalid Location'. Synology won't help. I've had this issue for a year now, and haven't figured it out. My DNS is pointing at GoogleDNS servers. Is there a port I have to forward?

Why does it work sometimes, and not others? I'm sorry to hear about your problem, but no, Package Center isn't just crap. I have a pair of Synology NAS drives at home an we install maybe 3 to 4 each week as video surveillance servers for our clients.

Out of maybe a hundred or so boxes that are happily purring, not one of them has a Package Center update issue. That said, I completely understand your frustration.

A couple of questions, if I may. what exactly do you mean by Synology won't help?. a simple test: have you tried shutting down the NAS and installing it someplace else? A friend's house, your office, just to see if a completely different network access fixes the issue or at least gives an indication as to where the problem might be coming from? I'm not sufficiently qualified in networking to help you, but from what I've read in the sub, there are a few people here who really know their shit. Edit: typos. Ok, I know it's not crap, I actually love it.

But I am frustrated. 1) Synology won't address issues with things that I have documented on their forum, like extremely slow Drupal speed compared to online drupal installations, etc.

2) Not going to go through that. A) no other place to try that, B) won't be taking my network periphs to someone's house only for them to tell me the reason why their router took a shit 2 years from now is because I 'did something'. You know how it goes. Tell one person you're 'good with computers' or something, and now you're indefinite tech support for free. Not havin' that. No how, No way. Well, not to sound like an ass, but testing the problem with a different access point is one of the basic troubleshooting tools.

Also, in the event Synology does eventually help you, they're most likely going to ask you to try the same thing. If the issue is coming from your internet access/setup, this test will confirm it. Alternatively, you could borrow a 4G router and bring a secondary internet access point to your house. This would avoid the problems you seem to want to avoid.

Not everyone has a 4G router however. Beyond that, I'm out of ideas. Is this something I would do using the terminal or ssh'ing into the box? The reason I ask is not because I'm new to it, but because it's been like 3 years since I made any significant change to the way my Network or my DS712 has been set up, and this issue only started within the last 6-12 months- if I were to think back to when it started to happen. Probably around the time when I upgraded to 5.0 Beta.

Do you have a command I can run to check? My issue is that sometimes it will work, sometimes it won't. And it tells me the location is incorrect. Well why is it correct sometimes, and not others? This problem still isn't solved.

I don't know what the hell to do. When I click on 'community' packages, it says 'All packages have been installed' and then it shows nothing.

Then it will show 'Connection failed. Please check your network settings'.

But if I refresh it like 10 times it will populate with the packages. I am pretty sure it's not the router, because- guess what. My last router died and I have a new one! And my network settings within the DS712+ are ok.

I've tried google DNS as well as my router IP as the IPV4 gateway and DNS servers. I just don't even know what to do anymore.

does anyone know how to check the CONNECTIONS access log on the synology dsm?. can this be an SSL issue? I have an SSL cert signed by StartSSL. i've tried every fucking possible network combo and restarted every device and I have no idea wtf is going on anymore, I'm ready to give up- but I want my custom packages to fucking work or this Synology is just another file box.
